Cedric Coward Enters NCAA Transfer Portal as Washington State Seeks New Direction
Washington State shooting guard Cedric Coward has entered the NCAA transfer portal. He joined this portal after coming over from Eastern Washington. Coward has one season of eligibility left. At Eastern Washington he suffered a season-ending injury last year.
Coward showed promise when he played at Eastern Washington. He played six games before his injury struck. In those games he averaged 17.7 points, 7.0 rebounds, and 3.7 assists. On November 18 he scored 30 points against Northern Colorado. This burst of scoring hinted at what he could do if he remained healthy.
Earlier at Eastern Washington, Coward earned All-Big Sky first-team honors. He averaged 15.4 points and 6.7 rebounds. Before moving to Washington State he was ranked as the No. 38 overall prospect in the transfer portal. This ranking pointed to his potential value for any team.
Coward began his basketball career at Central High School in Fresno, California. Later, he committed to Division III Willamette University for his freshman year. There he made an impact by earning NWC Freshman of the Year honors. He averaged 19.4 points and 12.0 rebounds in his first season.
Coward’s departure marks a key moment for Washington State. He is the fourth player from the Cougars to enter the transfer portal this offseason. The team ended last season with a 19-15 record. Now they work to strengthen their roster as they have not yet added new talent.
The NCAA transfer portal opened on March 24 and will close on April 22. Nearly 1,962 Division I players used it last spring. Already, over 1,000 players have registered this year. In the 2024-25 season, transfer players scored more than half of all college basketball points. This shows how much the portal now drives the game.
