Texas Basketball Faces Uncertainty as Rodney Terry’s Future Hangs in the Balance
After Texas lost to Xavier on Wednesday night in the First Four, the athletic department faces a hard choice about head coach Rodney Terry. Texas lost, and now they must decide.
Rodney Terry became the interim head coach after Chris Beard left mid-season. He earned the full role by leading the team to an Elite Eight run. Yet Texas struggled. They missed the 2024 NCAA Tournament. They lost a 13‐point second-half lead to Xavier.
Now, questions rise about Terry’s future in Austin. Reports say coach Sean Miller from Xavier may have a chance for the job. Miller was eyed before, when Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte looked for a new coach.
In the game on Wednesday, Texas fell behind in the second half. They scored 33 points; Xavier scored 47. Miller called the contest “one of the greatest games I’ve been a part of.”
During College GameDay, ESPN’s Pete Thamel spoke about the decision. He said a change is not sudden. Instead, Del Conte always plans ahead. Del Conte has moved quickly before, bringing in Steve Sarkisian for football, Jim Schlossnagle for baseball, and Vic Schaefer for women’s basketball.
Pete Thamel stated, "Before promoting Rodney Terry, Del Conte did much work with Quin Snyder and Sean Miller. Don’t expect Snyder now, but do expect Del Conte to pull in the top names."
As Texas rethinks its men’s basketball plan, all eyes turn to the coming days. The Longhorns and their future in basketball now hang in the balance.
