Tre Donaldson played for Auburn under coach Bruce Pearl for two seasons. He ended his season in 2023–24 and entered the transfer portal. He chose Michigan as his new home. At Michigan, he quickly became a key player on coach Dusty May’s updated roster.
When the NCAA Tournament bracket appeared, a matchup with Auburn came into view. Donaldson felt excited about a chance to face his old team. In a talk with basketball legend Charles Barkley, he said, “I want Auburn.” Michigan and Auburn may meet in the South Region’s Sweet Sixteen. Two wins are needed to reach that stage. Donaldson looks forward to reuniting with his former team. During halftime in the St. John’s versus Nebraska Omaha game, Barkley noted Donaldson’s strong play since he left Auburn. “I hate that we lost him at Auburn, but man, he’s done a fabulous job,” Barkley said. He added, “Let me tell you something. He wants to win, because he wants Auburn. I talked to him the other day, he says, ‘You know, we play Auburn?’ I said, ‘Trust me. I already know.’ He says, ‘I want that Auburn team.’ So I’m excited for him.”
