Silas Barksdale Flips Commitment from VCU to Virginia, Following Coach Odom

Silas Barksdale, a top 2025 prospect ranked No. 88, flips his choice. He now joins the University of Virginia. He first committed to VCU on September 5, 2024. He chooses Virginia to follow head coach Ryan Odom.

The 6‑foot‑8, 225‑pound forward says his choice felt heavy. He knows Richmond well from AAU games and family trips. He said, "It was a very tough decision because I got very comfortable with Richmond. It is also not far from me." He added, "I feel great about supporting Coach Odom in his new role. His story fits perfectly, and I feel blessed to join the journey."

Barksdale comes from Newport News, Virginia. He has always dreamed of playing for the Cavaliers. He said, "Ever since I committed to VCU, I wanted to play for Coach Odom. I love the way he plays. He builds great defense, and it suits me. I have a high motor, so I play hard on both ends."

When Coach Odom re-recruited him, he spoke of a role at Virginia that matched his plans at VCU. Barksdale shared, "I was one of the first recruits he called. Our bond started on day one. He lets me speak my mind. He will use me wisely, let me play my game, and let me have fun."

Barksdale shows true excitement for his future at Virginia. He has long admired the Cavaliers from campus games and events. He said, "I have always been a big fan of UVA." He noted, "They won a national championship in 2019. That win meant a lot. The program is awesome, and the city has a strong sports past."

Scouts praise Barksdale for his on-court skills. Adam Finkelstein from 247Sports calls him a high-volume rebounder. He impacts play inside and from long range. His soft hands help him grab rebounds in traffic. He continues to work on his long-range shooting. His passing makes him fit well in half-court plays. He also finishes well in the paint despite his size.

With this change, the Virginia basketball team gains strength. Barksdale now joins recruit Chance Mallory, a point guard ranked No. 54 nationally. The Cavaliers build a strong roster under Coach Odom, and all eyes watch their new journey.
