DeShawn Harris-Smith Transfers from Maryland to Georgetown
DeShawn Harris-Smith leaves Maryland to join Georgetown. He enters the NCAA Transfer Portal with a clear goal. The guard spent two seasons with the Terrapins. Now, he moves to the Hoyas to boost the team under Coach Ed Cooley.
This season at Maryland, Harris-Smith played in 36 games. In four, he started the game. In each appearance, he scored 2.5 points, grabbed 2.4 rebounds, and made 1.0 assist in 15.3 minutes. He shot 39.5% from the field and 20% from beyond the arc. In the NCAA Tournament, he shone by scoring 11 points and collecting four rebounds, shooting perfectly (5 for 5) in the first round win against Grand Canyon.
Harris-Smith began his college career in his freshman year (2022–23). In that season, he took a bigger role. He averaged 7.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists in 29.5 minutes per game. He shot 36.8% from the field and 20.2% from three-point range. His performance showed he was a key player.
Before Maryland, Harris-Smith starred at Paul VI Catholic High School in Virginia. He earned a four-star rating as a top recruit. On3 ranked him 34th in the class and named him the 10th small forward among the 2023 recruits.
Maryland now faces many changes. The program lost several players when Coach Kevin Willard left for Villanova after the Sweet Sixteen exit. Six players have already entered the transfer portal. This happened even though former Texas A&M coach Buzz Williams recently took over.
Georgetown adds more talent this offseason. Harris-Smith joins Langston Love, a four-star recruit who came from Baylor. The Hoyas now work to become strong in the Big East. Under Coach Cooley’s third year, the team hopes to build on last season’s 18–16 record and 8–12 in conference. Even with signs of growth, they did not earn an NCAA Tournament spot.
Fans can keep up with transfers on On3’s Transfer Portal resources. The Hoyas plan to use their new talent to return to national attention.
