Former Dayton Guard Malachi Smith Signs with UConn
Malachi Smith, a former combo guard at Dayton, has now joined UConn. He transferred through the NCAA portal. Smith played four key years with the Flyers. His skills will add strength to UConn’s roster. The team now aims for a third title in four seasons.
Smith had his best season last year. He averaged 10.4 points per game. He added 2.9 rebounds and 5.3 assists. He shot well with 42.4% accuracy from the field and 38.3% from beyond the arc. This scoring skill will drive UConn’s success.
Smith was recruited with the Class of 2021. He did not carry an On3 ranking. This ranking combines scores from several services. A product of St. Raymond’s High School in the Bronx, New York, he learned college basketball quickly. This learning makes him a strong asset for UConn.
UConn now plans for the 2025-26 season. They look to Smith after Isaiah Abraham left. Abraham chose the transfer portal. He signed with Georgetown following a short time at UConn. Last season, Abraham played nine games in four minutes each. He averaged 1.6 points and 0.6 rebounds.
Abraham was once a respected four-star prospect. He ranked as the No. 63 overall recruit in 2024. Schools like Providence, Marquette, and Virginia Tech also showed interest. Yet, he chose UConn. He joined other high-profile signings, including Liam McNeely and Ahmad Nowell.
As UConn builds for the next season, all eyes stay on new talent and past victories. Fans can get live updates on player moves via On3’s Transfer Portal on social media.
