Kelvin Sampson Lauds Jon Scheyer’s Success at Duke: ‘He’s No Longer Just Replacing Coach K’
Duke gets ready for its first Final Four under Jon Scheyer. Scheyer, in his third season, leads his team to the final weekend of March Madness. Houston’s Kelvin Sampson now praises Duke’s head coach. He has worked in coaching for over 20 years, and he currently leads the Cougars.
Sampson points to the strong change Scheyer made after Coach K. He says, "Jon and his staff have done an excellent job developing this team." This comment comes before a tense Final Four matchup. Sampson adds that early losses to teams like Kansas and Kentucky might seem negative. Yet he insists these setbacks were part of a clear plan. "He had a plan. Let’s throw ’em out there; if we have some success, fine, if we have some failure, that’s fine, too. We want to be the best version of ourselves when we get to February, March, and now we’re in April," he explains. His words show deep respect for Scheyer’s approach.
Sampson also notes that the view of Scheyer has changed. Instead of being seen only as Coach K’s replacement, he is now known as Jon Scheyer. Getting his team into the Final Four speaks volumes. "Nobody talks about him replacing Coach K anymore. He’s Jon Scheyer. He’s got his team in the Final Four. I think that speaks volumes for him. Good for him,” he adds.
After Duke’s victory in the Elite Eight over Alabama, Scheyer reflected on the weight of following a legend. He said that stepping into Coach K’s shoes is rare. He wants the legacy to live on in Duke’s continued success as a top program. Scheyer honors the way Coach K paved the path for future achievements.
Yet the journey to the Final Four is only the beginning. Duke must now overcome a strong opponent, the Houston Cougars. The game will tip off on Saturday at 8:49 p.m. ET and is broadcast live on CBS. With a decade since Duke last won a national championship, fans are eager for more than just a Final Four appearance.
As anticipation grows, coaches and players are set to leave their mark on college basketball. Scheyer is busy shaping his own story, aiming for the title that Duke fans have long desired.
