INDIANA HOOSIERS NAME DARIAN DEVRIES AS NEW HEAD COACH, LOOKS TO BUILD A WINNING ROSTER
After the regular season ended, Indiana named Darian DeVries as head coach. He returns from a short time with West Virginia Mountaineers. He replaces Mike Woodson, who stepped down after the 2024–25 season. This hire starts a new era for Hoosier basketball.
DeVries joins Indiana after a strong run at West Virginia. He nearly led the Mountaineers to the NCAA Tournament in his first season. Before that, he had six seasons with the Drake Bulldogs. There, he took the team to three NCAA Tournament games and won three conference championships.
The timing is a bonus. Both Indiana and West Virginia missed the NCAA Tournament this year. This gap gives DeVries time to build his roster. He can set a strong base in Bloomington early in the offseason.

Jonathan Powell, F
Freshman forward Jonathan Powell entered the transfer portal. He made the move just one day after West Virginia’s bubble burst for the NCAA Tournament. Powell had become a key scorer for the Mountaineers. He started and averaged nearly nine points, four rebounds, one assist, and one steal per game. When Powell scored in double figures, West Virginia held a 12–3 record. With DeVries at Indiana, Powell could join the Hoosiers for the 2025–26 season. This choice keeps him in the Midwest and helps his growth in the Big Ten.
Amani Hansberry, F
Forward Amani Hansberry played an important role on defense at West Virginia. He came over via the transfer portal after a season with the Illinois Fighting Illini. Hansberry brought toughness and scored a career-best 9.8 points per game while pulling down seven rebounds. He also shot over 30 percent from long range in conference games. His play helped West Virginia rank second in defensive efficiency in the Big 12. Tucker DeVries, G
Star shooting guard Tucker DeVries faced a setback with a season-ending injury after eight games. Before the injury, he showed strong play that helped make the Mountaineers competitive in the Big 12. Reports from Jeff Goodman say Tucker may join his father, Darian, at Indiana. He plans to use his final year of eligibility next season. As a two-time MVC Player of the Year and a proven scorer, his move could give Indiana a boost.
These changes show that the Indiana Hoosiers are reshaping their roster under DeVries. The team looks ahead to the 2025–26 season with a mix of proven talent and strategic new additions—a promising sign for the storied program.
