Isaiah Johnson-Arigu Transfers to St. Thomas After Tenure with Iowa and Miami
In college basketball, forward Isaiah Johnson-Arigu moves teams. He played for the Iowa Hawkeyes and Miami Hurricanes. Now he joins St. Thomas University in Minnesota. This step brings him back to his home state. He shone at Totino-Grace High School in Minneapolis and earned a three-star prospect rating in the 2024 recruiting cycle according to On3 Industry Ranking.
Last season at Miami, Johnson-Arigu scored one point per game. He then moved to Iowa, where he did not play any game minutes. He now returns to his roots at St. Thomas, where new court time awaits him for the coming season.
The transfer follows hard times for the Iowa Hawkeyes. The team recently let go of head coach Fran McCaffery. They finished with a 17-16 record and a 7-13 mark in Big Ten play during the 2024-25 season. They missed the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row by finishing 12th in the conference. This result was the worst in McCaffery’s long tenure since 2010. During Iowa’s transition, they also added guard Kael Combs from the Drake Bulldogs. Combs joined soon after Drake’s former coach, Ben McCollum, moved to Iowa after Drake’s NCAA Tournament run. McCollum led the Bulldogs to success, and Combs is set to bring energy in his new role.
Combs played for Wyoming before joining Drake. At Drake in 2024-25, he played 31 games as a bench player. He averaged 12.9 minutes each game. He scored 3.8 points, grabbed 2.0 rebounds, and dished out 0.9 assists. His shooting percentage stood at 51.1% from the field.
Drake ended the season with a 31-4 record. The team upset Missouri in the NCAA Tournament’s first round. This strong performance gave Combs extra exposure before his new journey with the Hawkeyes.
