Arkansas Set to Clash with St. John’s in High-Stakes Battle of Coaches
The NCAA tournament moves forward. Arkansas, a No. 10 seed, readies itself to play St. John’s, a No. 2 seed, this Saturday afternoon. The game becomes a new, fierce chapter between coach John Calipari and coach Rick Pitino. Calipari leads the Razorbacks as underdogs. Pitino guides the Red Storm. ESPN analyst Jay Bilas says Calipari faces moments he knows well.
Bilas compares this clash to Calipari’s tough teams at UMass. When his team is trapped, Calipari finds wins. Yet to upset the Red Storm, Arkansas must fix key factors.
Bilas explained on SportsCenter, “First, they need to rebound.” Grabbing rebounds starts fast breaks. Fast breaks help them run against St. John’s defense. “They must get out, drive the ball, and transition,” Bilas said.
Bilas adds that Arkansas struggles with three-point shots. The team cannot rely on long-range scoring. Instead, they must attack the basket. “They need to lower their head, drive, pass, and attack the basket off the dribble,” Bilas explained. This play gets them to the foul line. The foul line is where they score best. It is the most efficient spot to score on a court.
In the first round, the Razorbacks showed they can draw fouls. They went to the free throw line 20 times. They made 85% of those shots and won 79–72 against Kansas. In their opener against Omaha, St. John’s played hard and committed 17 fouls. Omaha then got 19 free throw shots. For Arkansas, pushing St. John’s into foul trouble might be the key.
Arkansas will miss its top scorer, Adou Thiero. He averages 15.6 points per game and is strong in the paint. He usually gets five to seven free throw tries. Without him, Arkansas must find new ways to score and play physically.
The game tips off at 2:40 p.m. ET on CBS. This showdown will bring smart coaching and tough play. The stage is set for a thrilling, strategic battle.
