Bruce Pearl Endorses Transfer Portal Window Amid NCAA Tournament Chaos: "These Kids Are Wanting to Move"
The NCAA Tournament heats up as teams fight for a Sweet Sixteen spot. Off the court, the transfer portal opens. After a busy weekend, the portal took over 1,200 names by Wednesday. This event now complicates matters for the teams still in play.
Auburn’s head coach Bruce Pearl supports the portal’s timing. Many teams have ended their seasons. That makes opening the portal after the Round of 32 a good move for players who want change. On the TBS pregame show, he said, "Back in the day, we waited until the whole season was over. You have all teams, except 16, whose seasons are over. These kids are wanting to move. They’re wanting to make decisions for the rest of their lives."
Other voices in basketball join the talk. ESPN’s Dick Vitale, Arkansas head coach John Calipari, and many nationally recognized figures share their opinions. Michigan State’s coach Tom Izzo took a firm stance. He said we must keep our focus on the remaining teams instead of the portal.
During tournament time, Pearl joked about his team’s focus on the portal versus Izzo’s approach. He said, "Well, we’ve spent a little bit more time than Tom Izzo’s staff has spent on it. I love Coach Izzo, man. All day, every day, I could listen to him." Still, Pearl’s main focus stays with the game. Auburn will meet Michigan in the Sweet Sixteen Saturday at 8:39 p.m. ET on CBS.
Pearl also explained that he has not yet dived deep into transfer talks. He has made a few calls and held several conversations to prepare for the offseason. "When the season’s over, we’ll jump in," he assured. Auburn advanced by beating Alabama State and then Creighton. This puts the Tigers in a strong position.
As the game time nears, the debate over the transfer portal’s timing goes on. Many voices weigh in on this new trend. Pearl shows that college basketball is changing. Players now look to switch schools to shape their futures amid a demanding sport.
