Generally speaking, people love to play multi-state lottery games. And as you explore them, you’ll see that they have a different twist; a different angle. One of these games is called “Cash4Life,” and while it is perhaps more “regional” in nature than some of the others, like Mega Millions or Powerball, it still offers certain components that make it very attractive.
For just $2 per entry, players have the opportunity to win a prize that is, at least theoretically, good “for life.” And there is a better chance to win a prize of any kind here than there is with some of the other games.

The story behind Cash4Life
Cash4Life originated as a game in New York and New Jersey on June 13, 2014, so it is a relative newcomer. The object was for the customer to win a fixed daily or weekly sum for the rest of their life. And they did not want to make those customers wait too long for action, as the drawings are held daily, not weekly or semi-weekly.
Cash4Life is still in the “growth” stage, in the sense that there are only ten state lotteries on board at the present time:
- Florida
- Georgia
- Tennessee
- Indiana
- Maryland
- Missouri
- New York
- New Jersey
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
On a historical note, the Missouri lottery people switched from Lucky For Life to Cash4Life in 2021. So they are the latest to get involved.
How Cash4Life is played
A customer who gets a Cash4Life ticket will be asked to select five numbers from a group in the range of 1 through 60. Those are going to be the regular game numbers.
They will then select a number between 1 and 4 from a separate group. This is known as the “Cash Ball.” And this number will be picked by a random number generator (aka RNG).
And so the drawing takes place in Trenton, NJ (the state capital), at which point the winners are determined.
What are the odds of winning at Cash4Life?
Okay, that’s a good question. Here’s a table that shows you the various odds against each of the results that can possibly happen in a Cash4Life game. You’ll notice that the combinations may include just the regular numbers, although the numbers (among the five you have chosen) and the Cash Ball will carry higher odds and therefore a bigger payout.
RESULT | ODDS |
5 numbers + Cash Ball | 1 in 21,856,048 |
5 numbers only | 1 in 7,292,016 |
4 numbers + Cash Ball | 1 in 79,440 |
4 numbers only | 1 in 26,480 |
3 numbers + Cash Ball | 1 in 1471 |
3 numbers only | 1 in 490 |
2 numbers + Cash Ball | 1 in 83 |
2 numbers only | 1 in 28 |
1 number + Cash Ball | 1 in 13 |
Overall | 1 in 7.76 |
Cash4Life JackPot
There are two prizes that pay off very highly with Cash4Life.
The First Prize, which one can achieve by matching all five balls plus the Cash Ball, is fixed. It can be in the form of a lump sum or an annuity.
Let’s go over the annuity payment first. What it amounts to is an average of $1000 per day for life, with a minimum term of 20 years.
This isn’t paid out weekly to the winner, though. It is paid out $365,000 per year.
The winner can also take the payment in a lump sum, which makes all the money immediately available. This amounts to the estimated amount of cash that would be required to purchase the annuity that would facilitate the long-term prize.
There is also a Second Prize, which isn’t a horrible consolation. In this particular scenario, the player has matched all five of the regular balls he or she has selected on the ticket, but not the supplemental Cash Ball.
Of course, that makes a difference. Second Prize is also a “for life” proposition, but those winners who choose the annuity option will receive $1000 per week for a minimum of 20 years. This translates to $52,000 per year. When it comes to the lump sum payment, essentially it works the same as it does with the First Prize.
Payouts For Cash4Life
One of things you’re going to notice is the payouts for the winning combinations in Cash4Life are lower than those for games like Powerball or Mega Millions. And the jackpots are not something that are necessarily going to make national headlines.
But of course, that is balanced out by the fact that the odds are lower, and there are more drawings (one per day).
RESULT | PAYOUT |
5 of 5 numbers + Cash Ball | $1000 per day |
5 of 5 numbers only | $1000 per week |
4 of 5 numbers + Cash Ball | $2500 |
4 of 5 numbers only | $500 |
3 of 5 numbers + Cash Ball | $100 |
3 of 5 numbers only | $25 |
2 of 5 numbers + Cash Ball | $10 |
2 of 5 numbers only | $4 |
1 of 5 numbers + Cash Ball | $2 |
As you can see from the table, the jackpot for First Prize in Cash4Life is not huge. But it is consistent, and this prize is awarded every day. A customer can also be a steady winner even if he or she doesn’t hit the Cash Ball.
Claiming the prize in Cash4Life
If you have won a prize, and you are looking to cash that in, well, it depends on how much you’ve actually won.
If you are dealing in the “brick and mortar” world and have won $600 or less, you can take the ticket to a participating retailer (i.e., an establishment that sells tickets) within the jurisdiction (state) in which you have bought it. In this particular instance, you would sign the back of the ticket, complete whatever information is necessary and appear in person.
You can also sign and complete the info and send in the ticket by mail to the appropriate lottery office. The process may be slower, but it will get done.
For prizes ranging from $600.01 to $49,999, you would have to claim your prize through the mail or appear at a specifically designated lottery payment center. There is some tax liability that will go along with this prize claim.
If you have won $50,000 or more, your best bet is to call the lottery office to make arrangements to receive your prize. Ultimately you’ll need to show your government-issued ID and fill out some IRS forms. This is not a minefield; the government likes to publicize that they have lottery winners; they don’t want to make it a headache to pick up your prize.
Buying Cash4Life tickets online
It’s a bit of a different story if you have bought your ticket(s) online. In this instance, especially if you have bought it from a third-party source, any wins of $600 or less will be deposited in the account you have established for yourself. When the win is more than $600, the procedure is the same as we described above, and the third-party facilitator can assist you in certain ways as you go through that process.
You don’t have to go to a retailer to buy a Cash4Life ticket or collect winnings from one. There are alternative sources available.
One of those is Jackpot.com. It is accessible through its own website, as well as an app that can be downloaded for the iPhone or Android.
When you go through this apparatus, you would play the ticket the same way you would do if you were holding it in your hand. Jackpot.com will take the tickets that are filled out online or through the app and purchase them on a customer’s behalf from authorized retailers within their jurisdiction. Then they will deliver a scan of that ticket to you so as to document it.
If you win, they will send you a message to notify you. For wins of $600 or less, that can be deposited right into your account. For higher amounts, they will assist you in any way they can in order to collect your winnings from the state.
This app was launched officially in New York in August of 2023. And this is no “underground” operation; it was reported by WPIX-TV that members of the ownership groups of the New York Yankees and New York Giants were involved as investors. On the website it is indicated that there are marketing partnerships with the Yankees and Dallas Cowboys.
The Jackpocket app is also a very popular way to play Cash4Life without having to go to a retailer. It has been established in 17 states, and some of those are states in which Cash4Life is played.
Like Jackpot.com, it is known as a “courier” or “butler” service for lottery tickets, because it will buy tickets on the customer’s behalf. If you win, you are going to keep 100% of it. They do not demand a commission on winning tickets; what they do instead is take a fee out of the deposit you make. Customarily this is going to amount to about 7% of the deposit.
They also have bonus offers, although if you are used to the casino world, you are not likely to be overly impressed by them.
There are options you can exercise when you open an account with Jackpocket. For one thing, you can do a subscription, which allows you to automatically be part of every drawing, and you can use automatically generated numbers with those. When you are dealing with a game that has daily drawing, that kind of thing is important.
You can also throw in with a public pool, where every ticket is included with everyone else’s, and if the pool numbers win, everybody splits the prize.
There are many ways to make a deposit with Jackpot.com. Credit cards like Visa, MasterCard and Discover are among these choices, as are PayPal, Venmo, the Play + card, Apple Pay, bank transfers and e-Checks.
FAQ
Cash4Life is available in only a small percentage of states (10), while Mega Millions and Powerball are available through 45 state lotteries.
There are much smaller jackpots in Cash4Life. For example, you are never going to see them top a billion dollars. In fact, the top prizes are fixed – a $1000 a day average for First Prize and $1000 a week for Second Prize. The jackpot does not increase from one drawing to the next the way it does with those other two games.
There are, however, more prizes awarded with Cash4Life. That’s because there are more drawings. While Mega Millions draws twice a week and Powerball has three drawings per week, Cash4Life conducts a nightly drawing, making for a jackpot winner every day of the week.
The chances of winning a prize of any kind is much better with Cash4Life as compared to Mega Millions and Powerball. Overall, you can walk away from Cash4Life with a prize one time in 7.76 chances, while Mega Millions (one in 37) and Powerball (one in 25) are less likely to produce a prize for you.
You will if the winnings are one penny more than $600. At that point, you will have to register that win with the state in one form or another. That comes in the way of contacting a state payment center to collect.
In almost all cases, you would. That tax will vary from state to state, of course. In Florida and Tennessee there is no state income tax.
This would vary according to what state you are in, but if you were in Florida, for example, you would have 180 days to claim any prize that results from the drawing. In the case of the cash (lump sum) method of payment, the customer must make that claim within 60 days of the drawing.
Cash4Life drawings are held nightly at 9 PM ET and take place at the New Jersey state lottery headquarters in Trenton. It should also be mentioned that they use two different drawing devices – one for the “regular” numbers and the other for the Cash Ball.
Yes you can. They are available at the following address:
https://livestream.com/cash4life
That way you can find out immediately if you won.
Yes, you can. And you can do this whether it’s at an authorized retailer or online.
It would not be uncommon for you to be able to make up to 26 or more advance plays on a Cash4Life ticket. And when that is designated by you, the same numbers will apply on every one of them. Needless to say, you must also pay the $2 per ticket for each of those advance plays.
Yes, but it’s not the case everywhere.
There is the “Doubler,” an option that requires a $1 additional bet, and will enable you to double any return you have on a ticket that wins (this, of course, applies to non-jackpot wins).
The Doubler is available in New Jersey only.
In Missouri only, the “EZ Match” option, if exercised (for an additional dollar), adds five random numbers to the five numbers you have already selected. These numbers are not the same as those five numbers you originally picked on your ticket. You will win money if the drawn numbers match any of the additional numbers on the EZ Match ticket. The prize can be as high as $500.
In Tennessee only, the Quick Cash side game works almost exactly the same as EZ Match.
